Miss McEvoy's Class
Second class are preparing for Granny and Grandad's Day. Before the big day Mrs Malone visited Miss Mc Evoy's class in room 14 to tell us all about school when she was a young girl. She told us all about the different things she learned. She showed us how children learned their tables, spellings and how they did their reading. Children had to stand a lot and the teachers had sticks to hit children who were not working or listening!
She also showed us the games she played when she was younger, she brought in small balls and marbles to show us the games. We got a chance to play with the marbles.
Mrs Malone showed us how the boys and girls used to write in Irish. We practised this too! She showed us the ink and pen that boys and girls used too.

Ms. Brady's Class
We have been working very hard in room 12 since September.
Here is picture of us in our Hallowe'en costumes:
In Geography we did some work on homes and shelter. We used art straws to design some houses also. Here are the houses we created:
Before Christmas we were doing lots of work on the Robin. We read some facts about the Robin and discovered some interesting things. We then worked together with Ms. Brady to write a report about the bird. Here is the report we wrote.
Report - The Robin
The Robin is a bird associated with Winter and Christmas - time. This bird is very different from other birds because it has a red breast. It has brown and white feathers also.
The robin can eat food from plants and animals. During Winter people can leave out food on the bird tables for the Robin. They love to eat nuts, seeds and pieces of bread.
The male and female robin work together to make a home for their family. The male robin gathers the materials to make the nest, he brings these materials to the female robin then the female robin makes the nest. Sometimes she uses her body to shape the nest.
Robins like to have their own space, when the male robin sings he is telling other robins where his area is and warning them to stay away.
Unlike the Swallow, the Robin doesn't need to migrate to a warmer country every year. They can gather enough food during the cold months like Autumn and Winter.
It is important that we leave out food for the Robin so they can survive. We think everyone should bring their left- over pieces of bread or nuts to a bird table they have at home or to the school bird table.
In art we painted robins and created a lovely display of robins sitting on a tree and some of the robins are eating from a bird table. In English we wrote acrostics about the Robin, you can see some of our acrostics on the pictures.
Here are the pictures of our display:
In Science we have been doing some experiments to explore mixing. We mixed water with different items like sugar, flour, food colouring, coffee and salt. We predicted what would happen and discussed our results.
Look at our mixtures:
We then mixed water with oil. It was very interesting, we found out that the water and oil didn't mix. The oil stayed on top of the water. Can you guess why this happened?
Here is a picture of the result:
Mr. Fahy's Class
Mrs. Byrne's retirement.
November was a big month for our school as we said goodbye to Mrs. Byrne. We made her a book of advice and filmed a Lip Dub celebration of our school. Lots and lots of songs were sang at a retirement ceremony. There were plenty of surprises during her last week and it was a really exciting time to be in St Joseph's.
New year.
The second term of our last year in St. Joseph's is underway. We have a lot of work to do. In literacy, we are continuing to work on our comprehension skills. Maths games are played each week and this is helping us to do sums quickly in our heads and without using our fingers.
We also recorded several of the songs we sing in Irish. Some of the songs we sang for Mrs. Byrne were recorded too. All of these songs can be heard by clicking on the link below.

Here we are in our classroom. We are in 2nd class. We are in room 14. There are 20 children in our class. Our teacher is Miss Mc Evoy.
Each class level has a tree in St. Josephs. The 2nd class tree is the twisted hazel tree. We went to visit it this week. We saw the twisted branches and leaves and we found some hazelnuts too!

We are celebrating Friendship Week in 2nd Joseph's. We wrote some poems about friends. We also made books about ourselves and read them with our friends.
