Greetings from Miss Slevin's class. We're back after a nice relaxing Christmas break and ready to work hard.
This week we have been learning all about penguins from Antarctica, we researched on the internet and searched through some books to find the answers to the many questions we had. We wrote a report on penguins and we found out that:
1. Penguins live in the Antarctic
2. They eat fish.
3. They are black and white with orange beaks; Macaroni penguins have orange spiky hair.
4. Their predators include: sea lions, harp seals, foxes, large birds, orca whales, sharks, snakes and rats.
5. They can hide from their predators in the water as their black backs blend in with the deep dark ocean water.
6. Penguins have a layer of blubber and feathers to keep them warm, they also huddle in thousands to stay nice and cosy.
7. Penguins enjoy tobogganing, swimming, diving in and out of the water and catching fish.
8. Penguins can stay under water for 15 - 20 minutes.
9. When Mammy penguin lays an egg, Daddy penguins minds it under his belly on his feet while Mammy goes away in search of food.
10. Baby penguins are grey in colour, their parents can recognise them by their voices.
To find out more amazing penguin facts come visit our classroom notice board outside room 23.
In maths we are measuring the length and width of various objects. Using a trundle wheel we found out that the playground is 49 metres long and 33 metres wide.
We listened to the story of the Children of Lir and worked in groups to produce a dramatic freeze frame of different scenes from the story. We were then able to create a photo story on the computer by recording our voices to the pictures. We could then watch it back like a movie. It was great to hear everyone telling the story.
We were busy reading and creating maps in Geography. We had to imagine what we would see if we were a bird flying over our classroom and then we had to draw this picture. In groups we mapped out playgrounds and painted these afterwards.
Finn, the potter, visits our class very Wednesday to help us make pottery, this week we made heads with all the features such as eyes, ears and nose, a mouth, even hair. We learned how important it was not to handle the clay too much and to create a 'key' with a fork to bind the clay together. We can't wait until our pieces are dry enough to put into the Kiln. This is a large oven which will set the pieces.

Miss Larkin's class
This is Miss Larkin's First Class.
Here are some photos of us at Christmas time. We love Christmas. This year we had a special treat. We were invited to the Library in Tullamore to sing Christmas Carols. We practised our songs every day and our hard work really paid off! We really enjoyed our visit!
We love Friday afternoons. This is when we have golden time as a reward for our great work during the week! We love sharing and playing in groups. We are really creative with our lego and love making jigsaws together.
